Description of the group
Biopolis, S.L. is a leading microbial biotechnology company established in Valencia (Spain) since 2003, offering contract research and manufacturing.
Biopolis is shareheld by the National Spanish Research Council (CSIC) and industrial and financial partners.
Biopolis core competences are the isolation, selection, design, characterization, validation and production of microorganisms and cellular metabolites with applications in agro-food, feed, pharmaceutical and chemical industries. Facilities are available for molecular biology and biochemistry, bench-top fermentation and scale-up up to 3000 L.
Biopolis also has access to genomic research and next-generation sequencing facilities through its affiliate company
LifeSequencing (
www.lifesequencing.com) offering high-throughput DNA sequencing through Roche 454 GS FLX, IonTorrent and Illumina platforms, for bacterial and eukaryotic genome sequencing, metagenomics, transcriptomics and amplicon sequencing.
Biopolis contribution to
INDOX will be led by Dr
Marta Tortajada, Microbial Biotechnology Manager at
Biopolis. She has 10 years experience in protein overexpression in microbial systems and strain and bioprocess design for biochemical and bulk chemicals overproduction. Other members of
Biopolis participating to
INDOX project will be Prof
Daniel Ramón, CEO and CSO of
Biopolis S.L, with more than 150 publications and patents in microbial biotechnology and biotechnological production of microbial metabolites, together with Dr
Silvia Segarra, head of Biocatalysis Laboratory, and
Diego Rodríguez, MSc, responsible of bench-top fermentation and scale-up, both experienced in metabolic engineering and whole cell biocatalysis.
Main role in INDOX
The main role of
Biopolis will be to set-up processes for the overproduction of selected enzymes leading
WP6, and collaborate in process development and scale-up of both enzyme production and enzymatic transformation (e.g. for enzymatic production of flavours).
