The group belongs to the Department of Plant Biotechnology at IRNAS (one of the CSIC institutes in the area of Agriculture), and has two senior members, Dr Ana Gutiérrez and Dr José C. del Río who have high expertise in the chemical and structural characterization of lipids and lignin by different analytical techniques.

Ana Gutiérrez, Research Scientist of the CSIC, is the responsible of the IRNAS participation in INDOX. She has large expertise in the evaluation of the structural modifications of lipids and lignin after industrial processing, and chemical or enzymatic treatments, resulting in more than 100 SCI-articles, presentations in congresses and symposia and the issuing of several patents of invention.

IRNAS is the leader of WP8. The main role will be the study of the oxyfunctionalization reactions of aliphatic compounds (including alkanes, fatty alcohols and fatty acids) using peroxygenases, as well as further reactions catalyzed by laccases and other peroxidases (WP9). Several analytical techniques, including GC-MS, 2D NMR and Pyrolysis-GC/MS will be used to evaluate the modification of monomeric and polymeric substrates. IRNAS will also play an advisory role in Demonstration activities and will contribute to scientific Coordination and Dissemination of results.

Angel T. Martínez is Research Professor of CSIC at the group of Biotechnology for Lignocellulosic Biomass of CIB. He is member of ACS, ASM and TAPPI, with around 250 publications mainly related to oxidoreductases and microbial biotechnology.

His experience is supported by participation in more than 55 national and international research projects, in most of them as head researcher. Regarding EC Framework Programmes, he has coordinated projects of Industrial Biotechnology from FP3 to FP7, such as PEROXICATS (KBBE-2010-4-265397), BIORENEW (NMP2-CT-2006-026456), PELAS (QLK3-1999-00590), PITCH (QLK5-1999-01357) and AIR2 (CT93-1219).
