The International Graduate School of Zittau (
IHIZ) -a former state university in Saxony in the triangle where Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic meet- has become, since January 2013, a central unit of the Dresden University of Technology, the only excellence university in East Germany. IHIZ was founded in 1993 and is especially dedicated to the joint education of German and foreign Master and PhD students (

Description of the group

Encapsulated UPO
The Department of Bio- and Environmental Sciences consists of five research groups (Mycology & Enzymology, Bioinorganic Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Process Engineering, Hydrology) and has, at the moment, 27 members (4 technicians, 4 Master-, 13 PhD students, 2 postdocs, 2 senior scientists, 2 professors). Moreover, more than 40 visiting scientists from 12 countries have worked over the last years at the department. The research line of the department deals with the
functional biodiversity of fungal enzymes, with special emphasis on the biodegradation of natural polymers and the biotransformation of small organic compounds. During the last years, the scientific interest has focused onto unspecific peroxygenases and other new types of extracellular fungal enzymes (DyPs, LichPODs, GH78 hydrolases).

Harald Kellner

Christiane Liers

Rene Ullrich
Martin Hofrichter (professor, head of the department) leads the participation of the group in INDOX, in collaboration with
Christiane Liers (assistant professor). The following members of the group will be also involved in the project:
René Ullrich (PhD, senior scientist),
Harald Kellner (PhD, postdoc),
Marzena Poraj-Kobielska (PhD, postdoc),
Sebastian Peter (PhD, postdoc),
Martin Kluge (PhD student),
Marek Pecyna (PhD student),
Alexander Karich (PhD student) and
Ulrike Schneider (technician).
Main role in INDOX
Within the project,
TUD-IHIZ will focus on fungal peroxygenases, DyP-type and lichen peroxidases, the search for new biocatalysts of these types, the characterization of these enzymes as well as on the evaluation of their oxygen transfer and oxidation potential.
TUD-IHIZ is the leader of
WP1 and will study different aspects of these novel peroxidases.
