Description of the group
The group (
www.bic.wur.nl) has wide expertise in oxidative enzymes of biotechnological interest. It is part of the Agro-Food Sciences Group (AFSG) of Wageningen University and Research Centre (
WUR), the main institutefor
Food and Health research in The Netherlands.

The contribution to
INDOX will be led by Prof. Dr.
Willem J.H. van Berkel, who has large experience in flavoenzymes and other redox systems (molecular enzymology, applied biocatalysis; synthetic biology) resulting in ~
245 publications (papers, patents and chapters). Other members of the group indirectly participating in the project are: Dr
Carlo P.M. van Mierlo, assistant professor with ~
60 publications, who works on protein folding and stability; Dr.
Jan-Willem Borst, assistant professor with ~
60 publications, who works on protein fluorescence spectroscopy; Ing.
Adrie H. Westphal, research assistant with ~
70 publications, who works on molecular biology and biochemistry of flavoproteins;andseveral
PhD students working on flavoproteins (
Joseline Houtman,
Antsje Nolles and
Mieke Huijbers).
Main role in INDOX

Flavo Beads
The
WUR participation will focus on alcohol oxidases of the VAO family by considering: i) exploitation of natural diversity; ii) protein engineering to increase of operational stability by rational design and directed evolution; and iii) optimization of formation of interesting products.
WUR is the leader of
WP2 devoted to the discovery, biochemical and structural-functional studies of VAO family flavo-oxidases.
